Streams and strings in formal proofs
نویسنده
چکیده
Streams are acyclic directed subgraphs of the logical $ow graph of a proof representing bundles of paths with the same origin and the same end. The notion of stream is used to describe the evolution of proofs during cut-elimination in purely algebraic terms. The algebraic and combinatorial properties of $ow graphs emerging from our analysis serve to elucidate logical phenomena. However, the full logical signi)cance of the combinatorics, e.g. the absence of certain patterns within $ow graphs, remains unclear. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Decreasing Diagrams II
This theory formalizes a commutation version of decreasing diagrams for Church-Rosser modulo. The proof follows Felgenhauer and van Oostrom (RTA 2013). The theory also provides important specializations, in particular van Oostrom’s conversion version (TCS 2008) of decreasing diagrams. We follow the development described in [1]: Conversions are mapped to Greek strings, and we prove that whenever...
متن کاملKolmogorov Incompressibility Method in Formal Proofs A Critical Survey
We compare the incompressibility method of Kolmogorov complexity that is used in formal proofs of mathematical and computational results with more traditional methods such as proofs by counting, proofs by probabilistic arguments and proofs by pumping lemmas for formal languages. We consider applications of Kolmogorov complexity in several diierent areas such as lower bounds, average case analys...
متن کاملA Formal Framework for Stringology
A new formal framework for Stringology is proposed, which consists of a three-sorted logical theory S designed to capture the combinatorial reasoning about finite words. A witnessing theorem is proven which demonstrates how to extract algorithms for constructing strings from their proofs of existence. Various other applications of the theory are shown. The long term goal of this line of researc...
متن کاملPriority Setting Meets Multiple Streams: A Match to Be Further Examined?; Comment on “Introducing New Priority Setting and Resource Allocation Processes in a Canadian Healthcare Organization: A Case Study Analysis Informed by Multiple Streams Theory”
With demand for health services continuing to grow as populations age and new technologies emerge to meet health needs, healthcare policy-makers are under constant pressure to set priorities, ie, to make choices about the health services that can and cannot be funded within available resources. In a recent paper, Smith et al apply an influential policy studies framework – Kingdon’s multiple str...
متن کاملStrings and Languages
One of the reasons for carefully studying the notion of string in computer science, is that a computer program in some programming language, as well as its input and output, can be considered as strings (say, over the set of all ASCII characters). We are usually interested in some particular subset of all strings over some alphabet. For instance, the set of all abstract propositions is a subset...
